HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded $600,000 to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for two new projects to support maternal and child health research and promote breastfeeding.

A special project award for $400,000 was made to the National Research Network to Improve Children's Health Care, Pediatric Research in Office Settings at the Center for Child Health, an AAP research network in Burlington , Vt.   Project goals include increasing the number of minorities in the field of pediatric primary care research, reducing disparities in access to care, and improving care through dissemination of research to child health professionals, policymakers, educators and quality improvement groups.

A Breastfeeding Promotion in Physicians' Office Practices award worth $200,000 will train obstetricians, pediatricians, family practitioners and other health professionals to help women initiate breastfeeding and support them in breastfeeding until a newborn is at least six months old.

HRSA’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau administers both grants.
